Ditch the clutter, and create incredible ambiance with artful shelf decor.
Does your shelving decor bring you joy?
The question crossed my mind, as I delightfully placed the final pieces on the shelves at the newly designed Benefis Gift of Life housing. “Yes!”… I wanted to shout with a happy heart. There was no denying it. These shelves were deeply satisfying. Ivory tones set against the deep green backdrop, touches of silver mixed in with earthy florals, the perfect pops of whimsy mixed contemporary art, the decor felt at harmony with the beautiful space.
Open shelving can offer tremendous opportunity for artful decor. At its best, shelving decor brings both balance and moments of playful imagination and character. When left poorly decorated or undecorated, however, shelves can become collectors of unwanted artifacts. Neglected shelving can feel chaotic, unkempt, and become a missed opportunity for… joy!
Striking the perfect balance can be puzzling. Decorate your shelves like a pro with these simple design tips from DH owner Britta Lee.
1. Quality over quantity
Instead of purchasing inexpensive seasonal items that tire quickly, invest in a few key quality pieces that you love. Anchor pieces keep your shelves looking spectacular all the time, regardless of the season.

We love the Adele Sculpture in golden bronze. At 22” in length this piece makes a big statement and is easily integrated into many transitional, contemporary or even glam designs. $405
2. Neutrals are your friend
Often, when selecting decor, we are drawn to the most eye catching pop of color. Combining too many contrasting colors, however, makes the decor chaotic and unappealing.

The striking Lerdorf Vases are a set of 3 geometric shaped vases with white, charcoal and tan glaze. $495 set of 3
3. More Texture
Layering in a textural floral or earthy element can add depth and richness to your design.

The Elaine Floral is overflowing with preserved greenery, natural hydrangea, tortum, protea, phyllica and sora pods. An unexpected beauty of nature transformed into everlasting art. $1245.
4. Choose books selectively
Decorative books can make an excellent fill, but not just any book will do. Coordinate color and size to give a professional uniform feel to shelving decor.
